Sarah Delila "Dilly" Cole

Sarah Delila "Dilly" Cole was born November 8, 1863, in either Izard County, Arkansas or in Tennessee. (Sarah's burial record shows she was born in Tennessee, while census records show she was born in Arkansas.) She was the daughter of John Cole and Permelia Catharine George.  She was "Dilly" to her family and friends.

The 1880 Stone County, Arkansas census shows Catharine Cole, 45, widow; Josephine, 18, daughter; Sarah D., 16, daughter and Frances A. Holden, 8, niece.  They were living next to Dilly's grandparents, James S. and Margaret George

Dilly married James William Ingram on March 3, 1885, in Stone County, Arkansas.   James Ingram was born about November 1859, in Tennessee.  He was the son of William H. Ingram and Mary M. Woody

William H. Ingram was born July 1835, in Tennessee and died 1910-1920, in Oklahoma.  He was the son of Isaac Ingram (b. abt 1814, NC) and Mary Ann ___ (b. abt 1816, TN).   Mary M. Woody was born December 1835, in Tennessee and died 1900-1910, in Oklahoma.   William H. and Mary M. had ten children: (1) Isaac Joseph Ingram, b. July 1857, TN; (2) John B. Ingram, b. 1858, TN; (3) James William Ingram, b. Nov 1859, TN; m. Dilly Cole; (4) Jasper R. Ingram, b. 1866, TN; (5) Jesse Newton Ingram, b. 1866, TN; (6) Elihue Pinkney Ingram, b. James and Dilly raised their family in Arkansas, probably in Stone County.

James died between about 1890 and 1900, probably in Stone County.

The 1900 Stone County census, Sylamore Township, shows Sarah Ingram, head, 36, born November 1863, in Arkansas, widowed, given birth to 2 children, 2 children still living, a farmer who owned her farm; Asa J., son, 14, born December 1885, in Arkansas, farm laborer, and William L., son, 10, born February 1890, in Arkansas. The family was living next door to Dilly's sister,  Josephine (Cole) Roberts and her family.

The 1910 Stone County census, Sylamore Township, shows Sarah D. Ingram, head of household, 46, rented her farm, and William, son, 18, a farm laborer.

Dilly moved her family to Conway County, Arkansas between 1910 and 1920.

The 1920 Conway County, Arkansas, Welborn Township census shows Dilly living with her son William and his family near Morrilton. Dilly appears as Delila, age 55, widowed.

The Ingram family moved to Solgohachia, in Conway County, soon after 1920. My daddy said he remembered "Aunt Dilly" from when he was a boy at Solgohachia. The Ingram family lived at Solgohachia for a short time, before moving on to Oklahoma in the mid to late 1920's.

The 1930 Okfuskee County, Oklahoma census, Morse Township, shows Delila, 66, a widow, living next door to her son William L. Ingram and his family. Henry Bridgman was boarding with Dilly.  My grandmother, Frances Adeline Catharine (Holden) Bridgman, a 1st cousin to Dilly, was married to Henry's brother, Thomas Jefferson Bridgman.

Dilly died August 1, 1930, at Okemah, Oklahoma, and is buried in Highland Cemetery at Okemah (Block 6, Lot 662, Space 11).
