Elizabeth Crow

Elizabeth Crow was born about 1793, in Chatham County, North Carolina.    She was the daughter of John Crow and Sarah (last name unknown).

The 1800 Chatham County census shows Elizabeth as one of two females under the age of 10 (b. 1791-1800).

The 1810 Chatham County census shows her as the female 16-25 (b. (1785-1794) living with her parents and siblings.

Apparently Elizabeth was either physically or mentally handicapped and required help handling her affairs, as her father's will in 1815 make special provision for her care.    She was named in the will to receive a feather bed and furniture, and the "lend" of a slave as long as she remained single.    Her father appointed her brother James to be trustee over Elizabeth, after the death of her mother Sarah.     Elizabeth lived with James and his family from the 1820's until her death.

The 1820 Chatham County census shows Elizabeth as a female age 26-44 years, living with her widowed mother, Sarah and her brother Johnson.

Elizabeth's brother Johnson married and produced a son, James, who was born about 1826, in Chatham County.    Johnson and his wife Adelia both died about 1826, leaving their infant child an orphan.    Elizabeth's brother James took the infant into his home to raise.    Elizabeth and her mother moved into the household with her brother James and his family about the time that Johnson and his wife died.

The 1830 Chatham County census shows James Crow, age 40-49; one female age 70-80 (their mother Sarah); two females 30-39 (James' wife, Diana, and Elizabeth); one female (Sarah) age 5-9; one female ( Eliza) under 5; and two males (John and nephew James) under 5 years old.      James Crow had 12 slaves at the time.

Elizabeth's mother died about 1831-1833, and around 1834 James Crow moved his family, including Elizabeth and their nephew James, to Guilford County, North Carolina.

The 1840 Guilford County census shows James Crow, a male 50-59 (b. 1781-1790); one female (Diana) 40-49 (b. 1791-1800); one female (Elizabeth) 30-39 (b. 1801-1810); one male (John) 10-14 (b. 1826-1830); one female (Sarah) 10-14 (b. 1826-1830); one male (nephew James) 5-9 (b. 1831-1835); one female (Eliza) 5-9 (b. 1831-1835); one male (William) under 5 (b. 1836-1840); and two females (Sina & unknown) under 5 (b. 1836-1840).     James had 2 slaves.

An article which was written December 6, 1849, and published in the Georgia Journal and Messenger, on December 26, 1849, listed Elizabeth as an heir of John Crow who already gotten her share of the final settlement of her father's estate.   Other heirs listed were Jesse, James, Ruben, John, Gabriel, Johnson, Sarah, and Rachel.

We believe Elizabeth died between the time the newspaper article was written on December 6, 1849, and the time the census was taken in October 1850.
