Joseph J. Griggs was born about 1838, in Tennessee, according to census.    Mary was born April 1843, in Tennessee.    They married prior to 1865, in Tennessee.    All of their children were born in Tennessee according to census.

Joseph and Mary appear on the 1870 Decatur County, Tennessee census.    The census shows Joseph J. Griggs, 37, a farmer, $400 real property, $350 personal property; Mary V., 25; William R., 5; Lucy E., 3; and Freedonie, 1 year old.

The 1880 Decatur County, Tennessee census shows Joseph and Mary with seven children: W. R., son, 13; L. E., daughter, 12; D. B., daughter, 11; J. E., son, 9; Granvil, son, 7; H. A., daughter, 6 and F. E., son, 2 years old.

Joseph J. Griggs died prior to 1900.    The 1900 Pemiscot County, Missouri census shows Mary Griggs, head, 57, widow, had given birth to 12 children, 9 children were still living at that time. Listed with her on the census were her children Joseph, 21; Elmer, 19; Lucy, 30; Edna, 16 and Cora, 14 years of age.     Living next door was her son John Griggs and his family.

The 1910 Pemiscot County census shows Joseph Griggs, 31, single, a farmer; Mary V., mother, 66, widow, had given birth to 10 children, 8 children were still living.    Living next door was Mary's married daughter Cora Duniven and her family.     Mary Griggs, age 75, was listed on the 1920 census with Cora and Arthur Duniven.

Griggs (son), b. abt 1877, KY;    (8) Joseph Griggs, b. Feb 1879, TN;    (9) Elmer F. Griggs, b. Apr 1881, TN;    (10) Edna Griggs, b. Feb 1884, TN; and    (11) Cora Griggs, b. Apr 1886, TN; m. Arlton (or Arthur) Duniven.

  John E. Griggs married Tommie Young about 1898, in Missouri.     Tommie Young was born September 1880, in Missouri according to census.

John and Tommie lived in Pemiscot County, Missouri most, if not all, of their married life.    The 1900 Pemiscot County census shows John Griggs, 27, had been married 1 year, a farmer; Tommy, wife, 19, had given birth to 1 child; and Lilly, daughter, 8 months old.    John's family was living next door to his widowed mother Mary and her family.

The 1910 Pemiscot County census shows John E. Griggs, 35, married 12 years; Tommy, wife, 29, had given birth to 5 children, 5 children were still living; Lilly M., daughter, 10; Olie, son, 8; William M., son, 5; Golden L., daughter, 3; and Archie Y, son, 1 year old.    All the children were born in Missouri.    John's brother William R. Griggs and his family lived next door.

The 1930 Pemiscot County census shows John E. Griggs, 60; Tomie, 50; Lillie, 28, widowed or divorced, had married at age 26; Olie, 27, a farm laborer; Archie, 20, a farm laborer; Jessie, 18, a farm laborer; Elmer, 14; Thelma, 14; Lorine, 9; Ralph, 7 and Joseph, 5 years old.
