Hannah Almena Cargile

Hannah Almena Cargile was born March 15, 1852, in Conway County, Arkansas, the daughter of Robert Lewis Cargile and Hannah Elizabeth Livingston.

The 1860 Conway County census shows nine year old Hannah living in Union Township, near Springfield with her family.

Hannah married John A. Hinkle on December 25, 1867, in Conway County. John Hinkle, born May 1838, in Kentucky, was the son of Dr. Anthony Hinkle and Amanda A. Bowie.  Anthony Hinkle was born August 12, 1810, in Jefferson County, Kentucky and died February 20, 1893, in Faulkner County, Arkansas.   Amanda Bowie was born June 23, 1820, in Garrard County, Kentucky and died August 12, 1878, at Greenbrier, in Faulkner County.  Anthony and Amanda Hinkle are buried in Cadron Cemetery in Faulkner County.

On March 6, 1862, John Hinkle had enlisted at Clinton, in Van Buren County, in the 31st Regt. AR Confederate Infantry, Company F.   John was present on each Muster Roll until 1863.  At that time a Muster Roll dated May 1 to July 1, 1863 carried the remark that John had deserted.  John then appears on a Roll of Prisioners of War, Headquarters Dept. of the Tennessee, Vicksburg, Mississippi, which shows he was captured by Expeditionary Army, near Jackson, Mississippi on July 16, 1863, and sent to Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi on July 30, 1863.  John was sent to a   Prisioner of War Camp at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana.  The record shows he was received at Camp Morton on August 7, 1863 and released on oath May 22, 1865.  John returned to Conway County where, two years later, he married Hannah Cargile.

John Hinkle was a lawyer and a Judge in Conway County for a number of years. 

The 1870 Conway County census, Union Township, Springfield Post Office, shows John Hinkle, 32, a farmer, $7000 real estate property, $700 personal property; Almena, 18 and Carra, 11 months old, born in June.

John and Hannah had a short time together, however.  Hannah died October 6, 1872, at Springfield, in Conway County. She is buried in the Springfield Cemetery.

John married Mary E. Morgan on August 7, 1873, in Conway County.  Mary Morgan was born March 1852, in Alabama. 

The 1880 Conway County census, Welborn Township, Town of Morrilton, shows John Hinkle, 42, a lawyer; Mary E., wife, 27; Hattie A., daughter, 5; William A., son, 3 and John H., son, 2 years old.  Living with the family was Mary's cousin, Sarah Morgan, 27, born in Alabama.  John and Hannah's 10 year old daughter Carra was living with her grandparents, Robert L. and Hannah Cargile in the Town of Springfield, in Conway County.

John moved his family to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) prior to 1893.  By 1900 the family was settled at Ardmore.  (Daughter Carra had married and settled in Conway County, Arkansas in 1891.)

The 1900 Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory census shows the family in the Town of Ardmore.  The census shows John Hinkle, born May 1838, 62, married 25 years, a lawyer who owned his house; Mary E., wife, born March 1852, 48, had given birth to 4 children, 1 child was still living and Homer J., son, born Dec 1877, 22, a cotton sampler. Living with the family at that time was their widowed son-in-law, James J. Chandler, a dry goods salesman and their grandchildren, James Chandler, 3 and Hazen Chandler, 2 years old.

The 1910 Carter County, Oklahoma, Town of Ardmore census shows John Hinckle, 71, married 2 times, a civil law lawyer; Mary E., wife, 50, married 1 time, had given birth to 4 children, 3 children were still living and Homer J., son, 32, single, a real estate agent. 

The 1920 Carter County, Oklahoma, Town of Ardmore census shows John Hinkle, 81, a judge & real estate owner and Mary E., wife, 67 years old.  Rooming with them was Andrew J. Culberson,  21, born in Texas, an Associated Press operator.  Living next door was their son Homer and his family. 

John Hinkle died in 1923, at Ardmore, Oklahoma.  He is buried in Rosehill Cemetery at Ardmore.
