James Bridgman

James Bridgman was born about 1817, in Campbell County, Tennessee.  He was the son of William Bridgman and Mariam Brown.

James married Adelia Duncan Proctor on August 18, 1847, in Moniteau County, Missouri. 

Census records give a wide range of birth years and birth states for Adelia Proctor.  The 1850 census shows she was born about 1828, in Missouri; the 1860 census shows she was born about 1830, in Kentucky; the 1870 census shows she was born about 1820, in Tennessee and the 1900 census shows she was born September 1830, in Kentucky.  We believe she was probably born about September 1828. 

Adelia was the daughter of Moses Pinkston Proctor and Eliza Duncan.  Moses Proctor was born June 26, 1800, in Madison County, Kentucky and died 1872 in Doniphan County, Kansas.  Eliza Duncan was born 1801, in Moniteau County, Missouri and died 1841 in Moniteau County.  They had at least 8 children including (1) Adelia Duncan Proctor, b. Sept 1828; (2) Delcenia Proctor, b. abt 1829; (3) Marion Proctor, b. abt 1831; (4) Washington Proctor, b. abt 1832; (5) Barrilla Proctor, b. abt 1834; (6) William Proctor, b. abt 1836; (7) Matilda Proctor, b. abt 1838 and (8) John Proctor, b. 1841.

The 1850 Holt County, Missouri census shows James Bridgeman, 32, a farmer, $250 real property, born in Tennessee; Achilla Bridgeman, 22, born in Missouri and William Bridgeman, 2, born in Missouri.  They were living with Adelia's widowed father and her siblings.

Prior to about 1857, the family was in Kansas.  Their son John was born there about 1857.  The family then moved to Texas.

The 1860 Ellis County, Texas census shows J. Bridgeman, 44, farmer, $425 personal property, born in Virginia; A. D., 30, Kentucky; E. J., 9, female, Missouri; M. F., 6, male, Missouri; J. R., 3, male, Kansas Territory and ____ (unable to read first name on census), 3 months, male, born in Texas.

The 1870 Holt County, Missouri census shows James Bridgman, 60, farmer, $200 real property, $500 personal property; Adelia, 50, born in Tennessee and John, 12, Missouri.  Living with the family were William F. Groham, 21, Tennessee; Mary C. Groham, 24, Tennessee and Betsey J. Groham, 3, Tennessee.

James Bridgman died in 1874.  

Sometime after James' death, Adelia married _____ Reynolds, who died prior to 1900. 

The 1900 Brown County, Kansas census shows Adelia Renolds, born September 1830, 69, widowed, born in Kentucky, owned her house  free of mortgage.  Living with her was her son John Bridgman, born November 1854, 45, single, born in Kansas.  She was living next to her daughter Eliza Jane and her family. 

Adelia died April 11, 1906, in Brown County, Kansas.

We do not know how many children were born to James and Adelia.  Census reflects that only three grew to adulthood.

2.  Eliza Jane Bridgman, b. July 1850, MO 

3.  Marion Franklin "Frank" Bridgman, b. abt 1852, MO;

4. John R. Bridgman, b. abt 1855, KS; never married.   (The 1860 Ellis Co, TX census lists him as 3.  The 1870 Holt Co, MO census lists him as 12.  Living with his sister Eliza Jane in 1880 Brown Co, KS, he is listed as 22.  In 1900 Brown Co, KS, living with his mother he is listed as born Nov 1854.  Prior to 1910, he was sent to prison in Brown Co, KS.  He is listed as 58 in 1910.  John is listed as a prison inmate in Brown Co. again in 1920 and 1930.)
