Jesse Crow

Jesse Crow was probably born about 1778, in Chatham County, North Carolina.    He was the son of John Crow and Sarah (last name unknown).    We believe Jesse was the eldest son.

Jesse appears with his parents and siblings on the 1790 and 1800 census.    The 1790 Hillsborough, Chatham County, North Carolina, census shows Jesse as one of four free white males under the age of 16 (born 1775-1790).    The 1800 Chatham County census shows Jesse as one of four males age 10-15 (born 1785-1790).    (After comparing Jesse's age on other census years, we believe the age on the 1800 census is incorrect.)

Jesse married Martha Patsy Pendergrass on February 24, 1807, in Orange County, North Carolina.    Martha Pendergrass was born about 1789, in Orange County.

The 1810 Chatham County census shows Jesse Crow, a male age 26-44 (b. 1766-1784); one male under 10 (Ludwell); one female (Martha)16-25 and one female under 10 (name unknown).    Jesse was living not far from his father and his brother Reuben.

Jesse was named in his father's will in 1815.    He was to inherit a 25 acre tract of land called "the Copeland place".    He was also to receive an equal share of the remainder of the property, except the land, upon the death of his mother.

The 1820 Chatham County census shows Jesse (listed as John Crow on the census), a male 26-44 (b. 1776-1794); one male 10-15 (Ludwell); two males under 10 (Allen & John); one female 26-44 (Martha); one female 10-15 (name unknown) and one female under 10 (Sarah).

Jesse moved his family to Tennessee prior to 1830.     The 1830 Dickson County, Tennessee census shows Jesse, a male 50-59 (b. 1771-1780); one male 15-19 (Ludwell); one male 10-14 (Allen); one male 5-9 (John); one male under 5 (Manley); one female 40-49 (Martha); one female 20-29 (name unknown); one female 10-14 (Sarah); and one female 5-9 (Martha Ann).

The 1840 Dickson County census shows Jesse Crow, a male 60-69 (b. 1771-1780); two males 20-29 (Allen & John); two males 10-14 (Manley & Marion); one female (Martha) 50-59; one female 30-39 (name unknown); one female 20-29 (Sarah); and one female 10-14 (Martha Ann).

Martha died prior to 1850, in Dickson County.

An article which was written December 6, 1849, and published in the Georgia Journal and Messenger, on December 26, 1849, listed Jesse as an heir of John Crow who had not yet received his share of the money from the final settlement of the estate of his father, John Crow.     The article stated that Jesse had left North Carolina and settled in Tennessee.

The 1850 Dickson County census shows Jesse living with his youngest son, who had just married.    The census shows Marion Crow, 20, farmer, $250 real property, born TN; Margaret, 18, born TN; and Jessie Crow, 73, farmer, born NC.

Jesse Crow died prior to 1860, in Dickson County.
