(My thanks to Church Tilman for his contribution on this family.)
John Milton "Mitt" Bridgman was born February 2, 1858, in Wayne County, Kentucky, the son of William Calvin Bridgman and Matilda Prock.
Mitt appears on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Wayne County census with his parents and siblings. He was listed as 21 years old on the 1880 census.
It appears either Mitt married (name unknown) about 1880 or he had a son born out of wedlock at that time.
Mitt married Emily Frances Daniel on February 18, 1884, in Wayne County, Kentucky.
Emily Daniel was born January 13, 1859, in Wayne County, the daughter of Solomon Daniel (b. 1823, TN; d. 1909, Wayne Co, KY) and Elizabeth Ragan (b. 1837, VA; d. 1910, KY). Emily's sister Amanda C. Daniel married Mitt's brother William O. Bridgman. (Note: We located Emily and her family on the 1860 and 1870 census, but were unable to locate them in 1880.)
Mitt was named in his father's will, dated August 5, 1896.
The 1900 Wayne County census shows John M. Bridgman, born Feb 1858, 42, married 19 years, a farmer who owned his farm; Emily, wife, born Jan 1858, 42, married 19 years, had given birth to 6 children, 6 children were still living; James M., son, born May 1880, 20, farm laborer; William, son, born July 1885, 14; Calvin, son, born Mar 1887, 13; John W., son, born Feb 1890, 10; Jeptha E.,son, born Apr 1896, 4 and Maud, daughter, born Feb 1900, 3 months old.
(Note: We do not believe Mitt's eldest child, James, was Emily's son because in 1900 she said she had given birth to 6 children and 6 were still living. Although 6 children were listed on the census, their daughter Lela was not listed. She would have been Emily's 6th child. We believe the eldest child belonged to John from a prior marriage or was born to him out of wedlock. We have found no information concerning this matter.)
The 1910 Wayne County census shows Mitt Bridgman, 50, married 1 time, married 25 years, a farmer; Emily, wife, 51, married 1 time, married 25 years, had given birth to 7 children, 7 children were still living; Sherman, son, 22, farm laborer; John W., son, 20, farm laborer; Jeptha, son, 15, farm laborer; Lela, daughter, 13 and Maudie, daughter, 9 years old. Living with the family at the time was Elizabeth Daniel, mother-in-law, 80, widow, had given birth to 11 children, 8 children were still living and Ada Daniel, niece, 16 years old.
The 1920 Wayne County census shows John M. Bridgman, 60, a farmer; Emley F., wife, 61 and Jep. E., son, 26, laborer on oil liners.
The 1930 Wayne County census shows Mitt Bridgeman, 71, a farmer and Emily, wife, 71 years old.
Mitt died March 1, 1937, in Wayne County. Emily died there on May 6, 1940.
(Note: We have listed Mitt's eldest child as belonging to Emily.)
