Mitchell L. Montgomery was born March 8, 1796, probably in Virginia. (The 1850 census says he was born in Pennsylvania.) He was the son of Mitchell Lowry K. Montgomery and Rebecca McNeely.
The 1790 and 1800 Virginia census records have been lost, as well as the 1810 Ohio census. We believe the Montgomery family was in Virginia at the time of the 1790 and the 1800 census and migrated to Ohio prior to 1810. We have no census records to prove this, however.
Mitchell appears with his family on the 1820 Guernsey County, Ohio census in Oxford Township. The census shows Mitchell L. K. Montgomery head of family, born before 1775; 1 male born 1775-1794; 3 males born 1795-1804; 1 female born before 1775 and 1 female born 1811-1820.
Mitchell married Sarah Young on March 31, 1822, in Belmont County, Ohio. Census indicates that Sarah was born about 1796. We believe Sarah had a brother, Cornelius Young, who was born about 1790.
Mitchell and Sarah settled in Morgan County, Ohio, which was in the same general area as Guernsey County. Mitchell was a farmer.
The 1830 Morgan County, Ohio census shows the family living in Morgan Township. The census shows Mitchell L. Montgomery head of household, born 1791-1800; 2 males born 1826-1830; 1 female born 1751-1760; 1 female born 1791-1800; 2 females born 1821-1825 and 1 female born 1826-1830. We do not know the identity of the elderly female on the census. It could have been Sarah's mother or any elderly relation who was living with the family at that time. Living next door to Mitchell's family in 1830 was the family of Cornelius Young, who we believe was Sarah's brother.
Sometime after the 1830 census was taken, the family moved to the southern part of Ohio. They settled in Scioto County, Ohio next to the Kentucky state line.
The 1840 Scioto County, Ohio census shows the family living in the Town of Portsmouth. The census shows M. L. Montgomery head of family born 1791-1800; 3 males born 1811-1820; 1 female born 1781-1790; 2 females born 1821-1825 and 1 female born 1826-1830. We believe the 3 males were entered in the wrong column. According to the 1830 census, there should have been two males born 1826-1830. We have no thoughts as to the identity of the third male included in the group.
Mitchell's daughter, Mary married about 1844. We do not know where the marriage took place, but census records indicate her husband was born in Kentucky and that they had a son born about 1845 in Kentucky.
Sarah Montgomery died prior to the 1850 census. Her daughter Mary also died prior to that time. We believe they may have died about the same time. We think Mary may have died in Spencer County, Indiana. We don't know where Sarah died. (Note: Mary's husband, William Wren, remarried on August 9, 1849, in Spencer County. We figure he probabably remarried within a few months after Mary died.)
The 1850 Spencer County, Indiana census shows Mitchell and part of his children living in Luce Township next door to his former son-in-law, William Wren. The census shows Mitchell L. Montgomery, laborer, 55, born in Pennsylvania; James Y., 19, laborer, born in Ohio and Sarah, 17, born in Iowa. Mitchell's daughter, Rebecca Montgomery, 22, born in Ohio, was living with the Britain and Jane Glenn family a short distance away from Mitchell.
We have been unable to locate Mitchell after 1850. His son James appeared in Spencer County, Luce Township on the 1860 census. He was living with the Barnett family, next door to the Glenn family that his sister had lived with previously. James was listed as 27 years old. We do not know how many children were born to Mitchell and Sarah. We have record of five.
