Robert C. Crouthers was born October 1, 1858, in Pope County, Arkansas, the son of Andrew N. Crouthers and Frances (last name unknown).
The 1860 Pope County census, Dover Township, lists 2 years old Robert as "child of" Caruthers.
The 1870 Pope County census, Dover Township, shows 11 year old Robert with his mother and father. Robert is the only child listed on the census. Some of Robert's siblings were living on farms nearby.
Robert's father died prior to 1880, in Pope County.
The 1880 Pope County, Arkansas census, Dover Township, shows 22 year old Robert living with his widowed mother. Robert was a farmer like his father.
The 1880 Pope County census, Wilson Township, shows 16 year old Emma Maddux living with the family of G. L. Johnson. The census shows G. L. Johnson, 48, farmer, born in Alabama; Sarah K., wife, 38, born in Alabama, father and mother both born in Georgia; A. Sidney, son, 13, born in Alabama; Benjamin P. Johnson, 11, born in Alabama; Horace Johnson, 8, born in Arkansas; Addie Johnson, daughter, 5, born in Arkansas; and Emma Maddux, 16, born in Alabama, father and mother both born in Georgia. It is probable that Sarah Johnson was Emma's aunt, or some other close relative. We believe Emma's parents died prior to 1880.
Living not far from the Johnson family was the family of J. G. Prim. The census shows J. G. Prim, 32, a farmer, born in Tennessee; Alabama Prim, wife, 27, born in Alabama, mother and father both born in Georgia; Maggie Prim, daughter, 9, born in Arkansas; William J. Prim, son, 7, born in Arkansas; Lulu Prim, daughter, 3, born in Arkansas; and R. Maddux, brother-in-law, 19, laborer, born in Alabama, father and mother both born in Georgia. We believe Alabama Prim and R. Maddux were siblings of Emma Maddox.
Robert married Emma H. Maddox on September 10, 1883, in Conway County, Arkansas. Emma Maddox was born March 25, 1865, in Alabama.
The 1900 Conway County census, Gregory Township, shows Robert Coruthers, 40, born October 1859, married 16 years, a farmer who rented his farm; Emma, wife, 36, born March 1864, married 16 years, had given birth to 5 children, 4 children were still living; Minnie M., daughter, 13, born July 1886; Robert Q., son, 10, born September 1889; Paul B., son, 3, born August 1896; and Infant, son, 1, born December 1898.
The 1910 Conway County census shows the family living near the Atkins Road in Gregory Township. The census shows Robert C. Carruthers, 51, married 1 time, 27 years, a farmer who owned his farm; Emma H., wife, 45, had given birth to 11 children, 7 children still living; Minnie M., daughter, 23; Paul B., son, 13; Roy M., son, 11; Harl C., son, 9; Rebecca E., daughter, 7; and Emma V., daughter, 5 years old.
Robert and Emma lived near Hattieville in Conway County for many years. Robert was a farmer. About 1914, the family moved to Morrilton, in Conway County.
The 1920 Conway County census shows the family living in the City of Morrilton, in Welborne Township. The census shows R. C. Carruthers, 60, owned his property; Emma, wife, 54; Roy, son, 21; Harrel, son, 18; and Rebecca, daughter, 17 years old.
Robert died August 7, 1926, in Conway County. Emma died February 15, 1940, in Conway County. They are buried in Elmwood Cemetery at Morrilton, in Conway County, Arkansas. The name is spelled Coruthers on their headstones.
The 1930 Conway County census, Welborn Township, Clifton Street, Ward 2 of the City of Morrilton, shows Harl C. Crouthers, rented home for $20 per month, 28, single, a dentist; Roy M., brother, 30, divorced, a taxi driver; and Emma H., mother, 66, widowed.
Although census indicates that at least 11 children were born to Robert and Emma, only 7 lived beyond infancy.
