Sampson David Bridgman

Sampson David Bridgman was born February 1819, in Campbell County, Tennessee, the son of William Bridgman and Mariam Brown.

We believe Sampson married (name unknown) about 1838.  The 1850 census shows he had a son born about 1839 and another son born about 1842. We know nothing more about this marriage.  We can only assume his first wife may have died in or soon after childbirth.

Sampson David married (2nd) Mary A. H. Queener on December 26, 1844, in Campbell County, Tennessee.  Census indicates Mary was born about 1810, in Tennessee.  It is possible she was married prior to her marriage to Sampson.   The couple settled in Bradley County, Tennessee prior to 1850.

The 1850 Bradley County, Tennessee census shows S. D. Bridgeman, 31, farmer, real estate valued at $3000; Mary A., 41; William, 11; Thomas, 8 and Benjamin, 4 years old.

Mary died about 1851, probably in Bradley County.  She and Sampson had one child.

Sampson David married (3rd) Sarah Jane Hinkle on May 30, 1852, in Tennessee. Sarah Hinkle was born December 6, 1831, in Tennessee.

The 1860 Bradley County, Tennessee census shows S. D. Bridgman, 35; Sarah, 28; Benjamin, 13; Thomas, 2 and Mary E., 1 month old. Living with the family was Sarah's brother, James Hinkle, 19 years old.

My thanks to Sandy Rogers Bridgman who submitted the following information. "Sampson David and Sarah Jane were living in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1862, when their son Charles was born. They left Cleveland in 1864 and moved to Columbus, Georgia. At the close of the Civil War they moved to Wards Station near Shellman, Georgia. At that time Sampson David had 3 large plantations, but hard times and the Civil War caused him to lose almost everything.  The family moved to Gintown, southeast of Albana, Georgia, then moved to Griffin, Georgia. The older children were put in school, but 6 weeks after that, Sampson David contracted pneumonia and died February 18, 1873.  The family had a lot of hard times and eventually lost almost everything."

The 1870 Dougherty County, Georgia census shows S. D. Bridgeman, 51, farmer, $5000 real property, $2000 personal property; Sarah J., 38; Thomas C., 14; Mary E., 11; Chas. L., 6, b. in TN; Robert L., 4, b. in GA and Martha J., 1 year old.  Living with the family at the time were Benjamin Bridgeman, 23, retired merchant, b. in TN; Eliza C. Bridgeman, 20, b. in GA; Nettie Bridgeman, 2, b. GA and R. R. Bynum, 25, overseer of farm, b. GA.

Sampson David Bridgman died February 18, 1873, at Griffin, Georgia.

The 1880 Murray County, Georgia census shows Sarah J. Bridgeman, widow, 42; Thomas C., son, 22; Mollie E., daughter, 19; Charles L., son, 17; Robert E., son, 13 and Tennie M., daughter, 10 years old.  Living with the family at the time was Leander Howard Clark, 22, b. in GA.  Sarah's daughter Mollie later married Howard Clark.

Sarah was living with her son Robert in Texarkana, Texas in 1900.  The 1900 Bowie County, Texas census shows R. L. Bridgeman, born Jan 1867, 33, married 11 years, railroad claim agent, owned his house; Minnie I., wife, born July 1868, 31, had given birth to 2 children, 1 child was still living, b. in TX; Neva Lee, daughter, born Oct 1893, 6, b. in TX; Sarah J. Bridgeman, mother, born Dec 1830, 69, widow, had given birth to 7 children, 4 children were still living; Grace Bates, niece, born Sept 1884, 15, b. in GA and Estelle Bates, niece, born Nov 1887, 12, b. in GA.

In 1910, Sarah was living with her daughter Mollie in San Antonio, Texas.  The 1910 Bexar County, Texas census shows Howard Clark, 53, married 24 years, carpenter; Molly, wife, 49, had given birth to 10 children, 5 children were still living; Myrtle, daughter, 19, b. in TX, publishing company stenographer; Ben, son, 17, b. in TX, stenographer; Ruby, daughter, 11, b. in TX and Sarah Bridgman, mother-in-law, 78, widow.  They were living next door to Sarah's son Robert and his family.

We believe Sarah died prior to 1920.  She is buried in San Antonio, Texas.
