Susie Izora McClure

Susie Izora McClure was born August 11, 1908, at Edgemont, in Cleburne County, Arkansas, the daughter of Dode McClure and Eliza J. Jones.

Susie was about five years old when her mother died. She lived with her father and step-mother for some time, but later lived for a while with her aunt, Mattie Izora (Jones) Hardin and her husband, Jasper N. Hardin. Susie was named for her Aunt Mattie Izora Jones.

Susie appears on the 1920 Van Buren County, Arkansas, census living in Culpepper Township with her sister, Julie (McClure) Jordon, and her husband, Major Jordon. Susie was listed on the census as eleven years of age.  Also living with them was their brother William Charles McClure.  Susie also lived for a time with her sister Georgie Drake and her family.

Susie, as well as her brothers and sisters, attended school at Culpepper Mountain School. Grades one through eight attended the one-room school. The school was heated with a wood burning stove and featured double front doors. The one-room of the school was divided with a curtain for two teachers. School was held two or three months during the summer and winter. The school was consolidated with Clinton school many years ago.

Susie married Elmer Smith on December 31, 1923, in Van Buren County. Elmer Smith was born in 1907, at Culpepper, the son of Thomas D. Smith and Mary E. Crawford.

The 1930 Van Buren County census, Culpepper Township, shows Elmer Smith, 22, married at 16, a farmer who rented his farm; and Susie, 21, married at 15.  Living nearby were Susie's sister, Georgia Drake and husband, James Drake, and Susie's brother, Charley McClure and his family.

Elmer died July 24, 1959, and is buried in Wolverton Cemetery on Wolverton Mountain in Van Buren County.

Susie moved to Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas, sometime after Elmer's death. Susie died August 31, 1994, and is buried in Wolverton Cemetery.
