Thomas W. Bridgman

Thomas W. Bridgman was born November 1848, in Campbell County, Tennessee, the son of Isaac Bridgman and Jane Butler.

Thomas was the last of Isaac and Jane's children to be born in Campbell County. The family moved to Walker County, Georgia, in 1849.

The 1850 Walker County, Georgia census, Chickamauga Township, shows 2 year old Thomas with his parents and siblings.

Thomas' father, Isaac, died in August 1859. The 1860 Walker County census, Rock Spring Post Office, shows 12 year old Thomas W. with his widowed mother and his siblings.

The 1870 Walker County census shows Thomas, 21, farm laborer; his sisters Lucinda J. Bridgman, 17 and Emily C. Bridgman, 14; his niece Hannah Stanfield, 8, all living with his mother's brother, Miller Creed Butler and his family.  

Thomas married (name unknown) about 1873, in Georgia. Thomas and his wife had at least three children.  Thomas' wife died in 1879, possibly during or after childbirth.

The 1880 Vernon County, Missouri census shows Thomas and his children living in Lake Township with his brother James Bridgman and his family. The census shows James Bridgman, 33; Cintha, wife, 32; Mary E., daughter, 7; Cora A., daughter, 4; Thomas Bridgman, widowed, 28; William S. Bridgman, 5; Claudius J. Bridgman, 3 and Vandiver Bridgman, 10 months old.

Thomas married Ruth Evelyn Davis on February 11, 1883, in Georgia.  Ruth Davis, born June 1860, in Georgia, was the daughter of Henry Scott Davis (b. 1830, TN; d. 1910) and Juliet A. Campbell (b. 1832, TN; d. 1916). 

The 1900 Walker County, Georgia census, LaFayette District, shows Thomas W. Bridgman, head, 52, born November 1848, married 26 years, a farmer; Ruth, wife, 39, born July 1861, married 16 years, had given birth to 5 children, 5 children still living; Claude J., son, 22, born December 1877; Orville, son, 16, born December 1883; Earl, son, 13, born February 1887; Maude, daughter, 12, born November 1887; Grady, son, 11, born April 1889 and Emmett, son, 6, born August 1893.

Thomas died August 26, 1918, in Walker County, Georgia and is buried in Chickamauga Cemetery in Walker County.

In 1920 Ruth was living with her daughter Maude and her family.  The 1920  Whitfield County, Georgia, Dalton District census shows Charlie Howell, 34, laborer at cotton mill; Maude, wife, 32; Cecil M., daughter, 13; J. D., son, 9; Edith O., daughter, 7; Herbert B., son, 4 years, 3 months and Hershel C., son, 4 years, 3 months old.  Living with the family was Ruth E. Bridgman, mother-in-law, 59, widow.  Boarding with the family was Lee Morgan, 31, born in Georgia, weaver at cotton mill.

Ruth died Ruth died August 11, 1931, in Walker County.
