Martin Snook was born about 1791-1800 and died about 1845-1849, in Kentucky. We believe his first wife was Elizabeth O'Nan, who was born about 1791-1800 and died about 1830-1833, in Kentucky.
Martin and his family appear on the 1830 and 1840 Franklin County, Kentucky census. Census records indicate that Martin had at least 10 children.
Martin and Elizabeth had several children including: William B. Snook (b. abt 1823, KY), James Hamilton Snook (b. abt 1824, KY), Allen Snook (b. abt 1825, KY) and Dennis O'Nan Snook (b. abt 1830, KY).
Martin Snook married again about 1831-1833. We believe his second wife was Jane White, who was born about 1815, in Kentucky. Martin and Jane had several children including: Sarah Elizabeth Snook (b. abt 1834, KY), Vanburen Snook (b. 1835, KY), Robert Andrew Snook (b. abt 1837, KY), Harrison Snook (b. abt 1838, KY), Francis M. Snook (b. abt 1841, KY) and David S. Snook (b. abt 1844, KY).
Van Buren Snook was born March 1835, in Franklin County, Kentucky. He was the son of Martin Snook and Jane White.
Van married Sarah Jane Duncan about 1857, in Kentucky. Sarah Duncan, born September 1837, in Kentucky, was the daughter of Augustin Duncan and Eliza (last name unknown).
Augustin Duncan was born about 1804, in Kentucky. Some researchers indicate he was the son of William Duncan and Nancy Jennings. Augustin and Eliza had several children including: Jennings Duncan (b. abt 1827, KY), Martha A. Duncan (b. abt 1831, KY), John B. Duncan (b. abt 1832, KY), James Duncan (b. abt 1834, KY), Elizabeth Duncan (b. abt 1836, KY), Sarah Jane Duncan (b. Sept 1837, KY), Daniel Duncan (b. abt 1841, KY), Emily Duncan (b. abt 1843, KY) and Louisiana Duncan (b. abt 1845, KY).
The 1860 Shelby County, Kentucky census shows V. B. Snook, 25, farmer; Sarah, 20; Florence, 2 and Walker, 4 months old. Living with them was James Snook, 30. We believe this was James Hamilton Snook, who was a half-brother to Van.
The 1870 Shelby County, Kentucky census shows Van B. Snook, 35, a farmer with real property valued at $9500 and personal property valued at $3000; Sarah, 31; Walker B., 10; Winfred, 8; Sidney J., 2; and Jennie, 7 months, born in November 1869.
The 1880 Shelby County census shows B. B. Snooks, 45, a farmer; Sarah, 44; Walker, 20; Winfred, 18; Sidney, 12; Jennie, 10 and Marion, 8 years old. The census was dated June 5, 1880. (Since Duncan was not listed, we assume he was born after June 5 of that year.)
We believe Van Snook died April 1891, in Kentucky. The 1900 Shelby County census shows Sarah J. Snook, 62, widow, had given birth to 10 children, 5 children were still living, a farmer; Marion, 28, a farmer (share cropper) and Duncan, 20, born August 1879, a farmer (share cropper). Living next door was Sarah's son Walker Snook and his family. We believe Sarah Jane died June 1901, in Kentucky.
We are unsure how many children were born to Van and Sarah. Census records name only six children.
