William Argyle Archer was born September 7, 1836, in Campbell County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Archer and Martha D. Bridgmon.
The 1840 and 1850 Campbell County census shows William at home with his parents and siblings.
The Archer family moved to Holt County, Missouri, about 1852.
William married Martha Jane Earley on March 29, 1857, in Holt County, Missouri. Martha was born in 1836, in Missouri and died in 1859, in Holt County, Missouri, probably in childbirth.
William then married Sarah Elizabeth Ross on February 16, 1861, in Holt County. Sarah Ross was born March 12, 1836, in Carroll County, Tennessee, the daughter of Robert Kimmons Ross and Jane Bird.
Robert Ross was born February 28, 1807, in Guilford County, North Carolina and died February 4, 1899. Jane Bird was born January 24, 1815, in Guilford County and died July 28, 1876, in Holt County, Missouri. They were married October 1, 1831, in Carroll County, Tennessee. Their children included: (1) Andrew Jackson Ross, b. Aug 1832; (2) John H. Ross, b. Nov 1833; d. 1845; (3) Nancy Ann Ross, b. Dec 1834; m. George W. McKee; (4) Sarah Elizabeth Ross, b. Mar 1836; (5) Mary Ann Ross, b. Dec 1838; (6) William Thomas Ross, b. Dec 1839; d.Feb 1858; (7) Eliza Jane Ross, b. Sept 1841; (8) Lucinda W. Ross, b. Sept 1843; (9) Robert Smith Ross, b. & d. Apr 15, 1845; (10) Rachel Ross, b. Aug 1846; (11) George W. Ross, b. Nov 1848; (12) Isaac Leroy Ross, b. Oct 1850; (13) Robert Kimmons Ross, Jr., b. Nov 1852; (14) Frances Ross, b. Aug 1854 and (15) Porter Ross, b. 1857.
Sarah died April 4, 1868, in Holt County, Missouri, soon after the birth of their second child. The two children were handed over to other family members to raise. Although we did not locate the oldest son, John, in 1870, we did find the youngest son, Robert, living with the family of Nancy and George McKee in 1870, Atchison County, Missouri. Nancy was a sister to Sarah.
William then married Mary Elizabeth Haush on June 10, 1869, in Rulo, Nebraska. Mary Jaush was born about 1845, in Indiana. William and Mary had 5 children.
The 1880 Holt County, Missouri census shows Wm. Acher, 45, farmer; Mary, 35, wife; Saml., 9, son; Marion, 6, son; Jessie L., 4, son and Emily, 1, daughter.
We have been told that William died in Holt County, Missouri on January 10, 1880.

John was living near his aunt Martha Archer in St. Joseph, MO in 1900; with his brother Robert in Nodaway County, MO in 1910; with is cousin Eugenia (McKee) Smith and family in Morgan Co, CO in 1920 and with his niece Gertrude (Archer) Headrick (daughter of his brother Robert) in Nodaway Co, MO in 1930.
