William Alderson Berry was born in 1829, probably in Wayne County, Tennessee. He was the second child born to William Berry and Sarah Weatherford.
He moved with his parents to Wayne County, Tennessee, prior to 1830. The family appears on the 1830 Wayne County census. William is shown to be a male under the age of 5 years.
The 1840 Wayne County census shows William to be 10-15 years old. The 1850 Wayne County census lists him as 21 years old and still single and living at home with his family.
William enlisted September 15, 1863 at Clifton, Tennessee, as a private in Co B, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, U.S. Volunteers. He was discharged October 17, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee. William was a farmer. His military records describe him as 5' 10", dark complexion, dark hair and gray eyes. His military papers say he was born near Lutts, Tennessee.
William apparently married about 1864/65. Census records indicate his first child was born about 1865/66. We do not know who William married. Records indicate at least three children were born in William and his first wife.
William was named in his father's will, dated September 18, 1866.
William married Mrs. Mary Martin on November 2, 1877, in Wayne County. Mary Martin was the widow of John Martin who died in 1854. Mary was born March 15, 1834, in Tennessee.
The 1880 Wayne County, Tennessee census, 8th Civil District, shows William A., 51; Mary, 46; Martha J., 15; Joseph, 13; and John, 9 years old.
William applied for his Civil War pension as an invalid on July 20, 1890, in Wayne County. He was granted a pension, and in 1892 applied for an increase to his pension.
William died in Wayne County on January 5, 1910. He is buried in McGlamery Cemetery near Waynesboro, in Wayne County. Mary died May 3, 1912 and is also buried in McGlamery Cemetery. We do not believe William and Mary had any children.
