William Butler was born about 1784, probably in Fauquier County, Virginia, the son of Spencer Butler and Elizabeth (last name unknown).
We believe that William's family moved to Culpeper County, Virginia shortly before or shortly after William was born.
William married Jane (last name unknown) after 1812, probably in Culpeper County.
William was mentioned in his father's will, dated July 20, 1818, to receive a tract of land. William and his brother, Thornton were made executors of their father's will.
The 1850 Culpeper County census shows William Butler, 70, living with his son Thornton and his family. William was listed as a pauper. Living next door to Thornton was his brother, George W. Butler. Jane, age 60, was living with George and his family. She was listed as both a pauper and insane. Living next door to George was his brother, William Butler and his family.
William and Jane both died between 1851 and 1859.
