Dennis Stell Cargile was born December 11, 1845, at Quitman, in Conway County, Arkansas, the son of Delemore Burvel Cargile and Mary Plant.
The 1850 Conway County census shows five year old Dennis, with his parents and siblings, living near Quitman in Benton Township. Dennis' mother, Mary, died between 1855 and 1859, and his father remarried prior to 1860.
The 1860 Conway County census shows Dennis, age 15, living at home near Quitman, in Benton Township, with his family.
Dennis served in Co. A, 10th Arkansas Infantry in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
Dennis married Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Williams in February 1867, at Quitman, Arkansas. Sarah Elizabeth Williams was born November 27, 1846, in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of Jesse Williams and Letitia Claiborne.
Dennis and Sarah appear on the 1870 Conway County census, living next door to his father and step-mother near Quitman, in Benton Township. The census shows D. S., 25, a farmer, born in Arkansas; Sarah, 23, born in Tennessee; William, 2, born in Arkansas; Mary, 1, born in Arkansas; and Loria, 1 month old, born in Arkansas.
The 1880 Van Buren County, Arkansas census shows the family in Cadron Township. The census shows Dennis, 35, a farmer; Sarah, 33; William, 12; Mary, 11; Laura, 10; Nancy, 8, born in Arkansas; Jesse, 6, born in Arkansas; and George, 1, born in Arkansas.
Sarah died June 21, 1890, at Quitman and is buried in the Quitman Cemetery.
Dennis married Emily C. Rackliff on January 11, 1894. They had a son born in 1894. Emily died February 6, 1896 and is buried in the Quitman Cemetery.
Dennis married Mrs. Lucy A. Bell on August 10, 1897. Lucy (maiden name unknown) was born about 1875, in Missouri. Dennis and Lucy had three children.
Dennis died March 10, 1923, at Quitman and is buried in the Quitman Cemetery.
The 1930 Van Buren County census, Cargile Township, shows Lucy A. Cargile, 55, widowed, owned her farm and a radio set, born in Missouri, father born in Tennessee, mother born in Iowa, a farm manager; Stella M., daughter, 31; and Faye H., son, 25, a laborer on his mother's farm. Living next door was son Alfred S. Cargile, 29, who owned his farm and a radio set; and his wife Gladys, 24 years old.
Lucy Cargile died January 1, 1936.
