John Cleveland Wren

Our grandfather John Cleveland Wren was born February 8, 1885, at New Madrid, in New Madrid County, Missouri.     He was the son of James Alfred Wren and Mary Jane Martin.

John appears with his family on the 1900 New Madrid County census.     He is shown to be 15 years old.

John's family moved to Iowa prior to 1907.    They settled at Muscatine, in Muscatine County.

John married Emma Rapp on March 27, 1907, at Muscatine, IA.     Emma Rapp was born April 5, 1888, in Bourbon or Drisco County, Kansas, the daughter of Paul Rapp and Katrina "Katherine" Kempf.

The 1910 Muscatine County census shows John and Emma living in the City of Muscatine next door to his parents.    The census shows John, 25, married one time, born in Missouri, working as a cutter in a button factory; and Emma, 22, married one time, married for three years; had given birth to one child, but had no children living, born in Kentucky.     Emma's parents and siblings were living next door to John's parents.

John and Emma had four children.    Emma died November 1, 1916, at Muscatine.    She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery at Muscatine.

 John then married our grandmother Ida Florence Paceley on May 22, 1919, at Muscatine.     Ida Paceley was born April 4, 1895, in Iowa, the daughter of Horace Edward Paceley and Elizabeth Jane Cline.

The 1920 Muscatine County census shows the family living on Bridgman Street in Ward 4, City of Muscatine.     The census shows John C. Wren, rented, 34, button cutter at button factory; Ida, wife, 24; William, son, 9 and J. Lewis, son, 7 years old.     Boarding with them was Benjamin Martin, 37, divorced, button cutter at button factory.

 1925 Muscatine County Special Census, city of Muscatine, Ward 3, shows Ida and the children living with her sisters in their home on Jackson Street.     We did not locate John Cleveland Wren on the special census.     The census shows:

The 1930 Muscatine County, Iowa census, City of Muscatine, shows John C. Wren, 45, working as a button cutter at the button factory in Muscatine, owned his house valued at $1000; Ida, wife, 35; Pearl, daughter, 7; Robert, son, 5 and Kenneth, son, 9 months old.

John continued working for the Pearl Button Factory as a button cutter at Muscatine for many years.     He and Ida raised their children in the city of Muscatine.

John died March 8, 1969, at Muscatine.     Ida died there in April 1972.     They are buried in Greenwood Cemetery at Muscatine.

1. Beulah Jane Wren was born Jan 3, 1909, and died Mar 27, 1909, at Muscatine, IA.    She is buried in Greenwood Cem.

2. William Thomas Wren was born Nov 21, 1910, at Muscatine, IA.

3. John Louis Wren was born Aug 8, 1912, at Muscatine, IA.     He died July 10, 1930, at Muscatine, after being bitten in May of that year by a rabid fox on a river road by the Mississippi River at Muscatine.    He is buried in Greenwood Cem.

4. Ellen Pauline Wren was born Aug 8, 1915, at Muscatine, IA.     She died Feb 15, 1917, at Muscatine, and is buried in Greenwood Cem.
