John English Horton

John English Horton was born April 4, 1836, at Lutts, in Wayne County, Tennessee, the son of James William Horton and Cynthia Atkinson.

John English married Mary Otha Catharine Cromwell on September 8, 1859, in Tennessee. Otha Catharine Cromwell was born January 29, 1840, in Tennessee, the daughter of William Fielding Cromwell and Mary Nancy Elizabeth Grimes. Otha Catharine's brother, John Sidney Cromwell, married Rachel Emeline Woody.

John English served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He was a member of Co. F, 6th Tennessee Cavalry. He is described in his military papers as 5' 11" tall, dark complexion, and dark hair.

The 1870 Wayne County, Tennessee census, 8th Civil District, shows J. E. Horton, 33, a farmer with $300 personal property; Catharine, 28; William J., 9; A. Lincoln, 7; John E., 6; and Sarah E., 3 years old.

Otha Cathryn died in Wayne County on January 10, 1916 and was laid to rest in the Horton Family Cemetery located on the Foster McGee farm on upper Indian Creek. John English died December 11, 1927, in Wayne County and is buried beside his wife. Those are the only two graves in the cemetery.
