Jacob Marion Flowers

(I have not researched the Flowers family, but am sharing the information I have regarding this family.)

Henry Edmond Flowers was born about 1766, in North Carolina. Henry married Elizabeth Marshall on July 18, 1797, in Johnson County, North Carolina. Elizabeth Marshall was born about 1768, in North Carolina.

Several children were born to Henry and Elizabeth, including at least three sons: (1) Needham D. Flowers, born about 1801, in Tennessee, married Keziah (last name unknown), died after 1860, in Pope County, Arkansas (Needham appears on the 1840, 1850 and 1860 Pope County census.); (2) Henry Flowers, b. about 1815, in Tennessee, married Cynthia (last name unknown), died after 1870, in Arkansas (Henry appears on the 1850 and 1860 Pope County, Arkansas census and the 1870 Van Buren County, Arkansas census.); and (3) Jacob Marion Flowers.

Henry Edmond Flowers died prior to 1850. Elizabeth appears on the 1850 Pope County, Arkansas census with her son Henry Flowers and his family. Elizabeth is listed as 82 years old on the census. Living next door is her son Jacob Flowers and his family. Living near-by is her son Needham Flowers and family.

Elizabeth Flowers died about 1855, in Pope County. She is buried in the Appleton Cemetery in Pope County.

Jacob Marion Flowers, son of Henry and Elizabeth Marshall Flowers, was born about 1816, in Tennessee. Jacob's brother Needham moved his family from Tennessee to Pope County, Arkansas prior to 1840. Census indicates Jacob's brother Henry had a child born about 1840 in Arkansas. We believe Jacob and the rest of the Flowers family moved to Arkansas prior to 1840 with his brothers Needham and Henry.

Jacob married Eliza Jane Duron on November 17, 1843, in Pope County, Arkansas. Eliza Jane Duron was born about 1826, in Arkansas according to census.

The 1850 Pope County census shows Jacob Flowers, 34, a farmer; Eliza J., 22; Elizabeth A., 3; and Henry E., 1 year old. Living next door was the family of Jacob's brother Henry. The census shows Henry Flowers, 35, a farmer; Cynthia, 40; Catherine, 18; Sarah, 10, born in Arkansas; and Elizabeth, 82, born in North Carolina. Living near-by was the family of Jacob's brother Needham. The census shows Nedem M. Flowers, 49, a farmer, Keziah, 55; Lurinda, 24; Elizabeth, 22; Sarah, 20; and Neomi, 18 years old.

The 1860 Pope County census shows Jacob Flowers, 49, a farmer with $800 personal property; Eliza J., 32; Elizabeth A., 14; Henry E., 11; Benjamin F., 9; William D., 7; John J., 5; William, 2; and Cynthia, 6 months old. (Notice that the name William is listed twice on the census. This was a mistake on the part of the census taker. The 7 year old William was in fact, Needham Flowers.) Living next door was Jacob's brother Henry Flowers, 51, a farmer. Henry is listed alone on the census.

Jacob Marion Flowers died between 1863 and 1869.

The 1870 Van Buren County, Arkansas census shows Eliza J. Flowers, 40, farming; Benjamin F., 19; Needham, 17; John J., 16; Cynthia, 10; and Jesse, 7 years old. Living next door is Jacob's brother Henry Flowers. The census shows Henry Flowers, 60, a farmer; Cynthia Patterson, 70, born in Tennessee (may have been one of Henry's sisters); Sarah Sweedon, 28 (this was Henry's daughter); and Sarah Hearn, 5 years old. (Sarah Hearn may have been a granddaughter.)

Eliza Jane moved to Conway County, Arkansas prior to 1880. The 1880 Conway County census, Lick Mountain Township, shows her living with her son John and his family. The census shows John Flowers, 25, farm laborer; Elizabeth, wife, 25; Mary Howard, step-daughter, 10; Hezekiah Howard, step-son, 9; Elbert Howard, step-son, 6; Eltona Howard, step-daughter, 1; Columbia J. Flowers, daughter, 2; and Eliza Jane Flowers, mother, 52.

We believe Eliza Jane died prior to 1900. She is probably buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Center Ridge, in Conway County.
