John Crow was born January 1, 1740, in St. George's Parish, Baltimore County, Maryland, the son of James Crow and Hannah Simpson.
John's mother died when he was about two years old and John's father remarried. Prior to 1750, the family moved to Orange County, North Carolina.
John married Ruth Holland about 1760, in North Carolina. Ruth Holland was born about 1744, in North Carolina. Ruth died prior to 1773.
John married Elizabeth Clarke in 1773, in Chatham County, North Carolina. (Chatham County was formed from Orange County in 1770.) Elizabeth Clarke was born in 1752, in South Carolina.
In 1792, John was named in his father's will to receive 10 shillings, and a share of the money derived from the sale of that part of the estate not willed to the children. He was also appointed to serve as executor of his father's estate, along with his brother, Stephen Crow. The will was executed in the February 1795 session of the Chatham County court.
We have been told that John and Elizabeth moved to Pickens County, South Carolina, prior to 1790.
Elizabeth died in 1820, in South Carolina. John died there in 1830.
There is much controversy about the children of John Crow. Information from other sources indicates nine children were born to John and Elizabeth. We do not believe the dates of birth given to us are correct, as they indicate Elizabeth bore children for over 36 years, therefore we will list only those dates of birth that we feel may be correct.
