Joseph Harmon was born June 16, 1852, in Posey County, Indiana, the son of Wilson Harmon and Elizabeth Endicott.
Sometime between 1868 and 1870, Wilson Harmon moved his family to Illinois. The family appears on the 1870 Gallatin County, Illinois census. Joseph, who is listed as Josephus on the census, is shown to be 18 years old.
Wilson moved his family from the Illinois and Indiana area between 1875 and 1879. The family appears on the 1880 Boone County, Arkansas, census. Joseph is not listed on the census with his family, however.
Joseph Harmon married Nevada Ann Hughes on February 8, 1884, in White County, Illinois. Joseph is listed as Josephus on the marriage license, which shows his place of birth as Posey County, Indiana. The license lists his place of residence as Phillipstown, White County, Illinois.
Nevada Ann Hughes was born April 14, 1864, in White County, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel Hughes and Selina Majors. Samuel Hughes was born May 31, 1834, in White County, and died August 1873. Selina Majors was born 1837, in White County, and died April 18, 1871.
Joseph and Nevada settled in Hawthorne Township of White County, Illinois to begin their family. Three children were born in Illinois and one in Indiana.
About 1891 or 1892, Joseph moved his family to the Indian Territory of present day Oklahoma. We believe this may have been around the time his mother died. Two more children were born to Joseph and Nevada in Indian Territory.
The family appears on the 1900 census in the Choctaw Nation of the Indian Territory. The location is given as Township 8 North, Range 25 East. The 1910 census shows the family living at Shady Point, near Poteau, in LeFlore County, Oklahoma.
Joseph died March 20, 1922, at Shady Point. He is buried in the Shady Point Cemetery. Nevada Ann died April 19, 1935, at Shady Point and is buried beside her husband.
