James T. Groom

(I have not researched the Groom family, but am sharing the information I have regarding this family.)

James T. Groom was born July 23, 1854, in Tennessee. He married Sarah Frances "Fannie" (last name unknown) about 1871, probably in Tennessee. Fannie was born July 3, 1855, in Tennessee.

The 1880 Gibson County, Tennessee census, Yorkville Township, shows J. G. Groom, head, 27, a farmer, born in Tennessee; Sarah, wife, 25, born in Tennessee; Huasker, son, 7, born in Tennessee; Mary I., daughter, 5, born in Tennessee; Katie C., daughter, 3, born in Tennessee; and Charlie T., son, 5 months old, born in Tennessee.

The Groom family moved from Tennessee to Arkansas between 1895 and 1900. They settled in Conway County, Arkansas prior to the 1900 census.

The 1900 Conway County census, Washington Township, shows James T. Groom, 47, born July 1852, married 29 years, a farmer who rented his farm; Sarah F., wife, 45, born July 1854, married 29 years, had given birth to 7 children, 6 children still living; Katie C., daughter, 23, born January 1877; Charley T., son, 20, born December 1879, a farm laborer; Lela B., daughter, 11, born August 1888; Robert T., son, 8, born November 1891; and Velma, daughter, 5, born March 1895.

Living next door on the 1900 census is the family of Robert's brother Huasker W. "Buck" Groom. The census shows Huasker Groom, 27, born November 1875, in Tennessee, married 4 years, a farmer who rented his farm; Etta, wife, 25, born March 1875, in Tennessee, married 4 years, had given birth to 2 children, 2 children still living; Clide, daughter, 3, born September 1896, in Tennessee; and Claude, son, 1, born May 1899, in Tennessee. Living with the family was Marth A. Davis, grandmother, 66, widowed, born July 1833, in Tennessee, had given birth to 8 children, 4 children still living.

Fannie died November 19, 1914 and is buried in Friendship Cemetery near Solgohachia in Conway County.

James married Jacie _____, who was born about 1877, in Mississippi according to census.

The 1930 Conway County census, Washington Township, shows James T. Groom, owned his farm worth $2500, 76, first married at 17 years; Jacie, wife, 53, married at 39; and Eunis Maye, adopted daughter, 16 years old. Living next door was his son Robert Groom and family.

James died December 31, 1936 and is buried in Friendship Cemetery.
