Edith Malinda Caroline Youngblood was born August 20, 1842, in Wayne County, Tennessee, the daughter of Josiah Youngblood and Mary "Polly" Horton.
Malinda married Hartwell Ebenezer John Shields Sims on September 1, 1859, in Wayne County. Shields Sims was born December 18, 1838, in Wayne County, the son of Matthew J. Sims, born in North Carolina, and Dorothy Greeson.
Shields was a farmer and owned about 500 acres of land in Wayne County. During the Civil War, he served as 1st Sergeant in Co. H, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry. After the war ended, Shields went back to farming. He also established a tanyard in Wayne County.
The 1870 Wayne County census, 8th Civil District, shows Shields Sims, 31, a farmer with $1700 real property and $1700 personal property; Malinda E., 27; Gennettia J., 8; Mary M., 6; Dortha, 4; Matthew J., 1; and Sarah E., 2 months old.
The 1880 Wayne County census, 8th Civil District, shows Shields Sims, 41, a farmer; Malindy, 37; Josie G., 19; Mary M., 16; Dorthy, 14; Josiah, 11; Sarah E., 10; and John S., 10 months old.
Malinda died April 22, 1915, in Wayne County. Shield died there January 26, 1927.
