Horace Edward Paceley

 Our great-great grandfather Horace Edward Paceley was born January 20, 1864, in Hamilton County, Ohio, according to family records.    The 1900 census shows he was born January 1861, in Ohio.    He was the son of Benjamin Franklin  Paceley and Elzira Parmer.

Horace Paceley married our great-great grandmother Elizabeth Jane Cline on March 23, 1891, possibly in Spencer County, Indiana.    Elizabeth Cline was born about 1864, in Monroe County, Ohio, the daughter of Peter Cline and Dorcas Brown.     The 1900 census shows she was born December 1860, but the 1910 and 1920 census indicate she was born about 1864.

Horace and Elizabeth settled at Fruitland, in Muscatine County, Iowa soon after their marriage.     Fruitland is located about two miles from the city of Muscatine.     Horace and Elizabeth's infant son was born and died in late 1891 or early 1892 at Fruitland.     He is buried in Island Cemetery at Fruitland. 

The 1895 Iowa Special State Census shows Horace Paceley, 33, born in Ohio, residing in Fruitland, Muscatine County, Iowa.     

The 1900 Muscatine County, Iowa census shows the family living in the City of Muscatine, Ward 4.      The census shows Horace E. Paceley, 39, born Jan 1861, married 10 years, farm laborer; Elizzie J., wife, 39, born Dec 1860, had given birth to 4 children, 3 children still living; Stella M., daughter, 6, born July 1893; Ida F., daughter, 5, born Apr 1895 and Mary E., daughter, 2, born Dec 1898.

Between 1900 and 1906, Horace purchased a house on Jackson Street in the city of Muscatine.     His family lived there for many years.

Horace died April 18, 1906, at Muscatine.      He is buried in Island Cemetery at Fruitland, beside his infant son.

 The 1910 Muscatine County census show Elizabeth, 46, a widow, had given birth to 5 children, 4 children still living; Stella M., 17, daughter; Ida F., 15, daughter; Mary E., 11, daughter and Clara H., 9, daughter.     The census shows the family was living in the City of Muscatine and the two older daughters were working at a button factory.     Stella, age 17, was a driller at the factory and Ida, age 15, was a carder at the factory.

The oldest daughter, Stella, married between 1910 and 1918.     The next daughter, Ida, married in 1919.

The 1920 Muscatine County census shows Elizabeth, 55, owned her home in the City of Muscatine; Mary, 21, working as a sorter at a button factory and Clara, 19, also working as a sorter at a button factory. Living with them was the oldest daughter, Stella Machu, 25, a widow, working as a finisher at a button factory.

Elizabeth died at Muscatine between 1920 and 1925.      We believe she is buried in an unmarked grave beside her husband and son in Island Cemetery at Fruitland. 

The 1925 Muscatine County Special Census shows the family still living at their residence on Jackson Street in Ward 3 of the city of Muscatine.  The census shows:

Children of Horace Paceley and Elizabeth Cline

1. Lewis Edward Paceley was born in late 1891 or early 1892, in IA.    He died as an infant, and is buried in Island Cem, at Fruitland, near Muscatine, IA.

2. Stella M. Paceley was born July 18, 1893, in IA.     She John Theo Machu about 1911-1915.    John Theo Machu was born Jan 10, 1891.     He died Apr 20, 1918, at Muscatine, IA and is buried in Greenwood Cem at Muscatine.     Stella died at Muscatine on Dec 5, 1952, and is buried in Greenwood Cem.

3. Ida Florence Paceley, was born Apr 4, 1895, at Muscatine, IA.     She married John Cleveland Wren.      (our line)

4. Mary E. Paceley was born Dec 27, 1898, at Muscatine, IA.     Mary never married.     She died Dec 1973, at Muscatine.

5. Clara Annlea H. Paceley was born 1901,  at Muscatine, IA.    Clara never married.    She died before 1972, probably at Muscatine.
