Horace Edward Paceley

Horace Edward Paceley was born January 20, 1864, in Ohio, according to family records. The 1900 census shows he was born January 1861, in Ohio. He was the son of Benjamin F. Paceley and Elzira Parmer.

Horace Paceley married Elizabeth Jane Cline, March 23, 1891. Elizabeth Cline was born about 1864, in Monroe County, Ohio, the daughter of Peter Cline and Dorcas Brown. The 1900 census shows she was born December 1860, but the 1910 and 1920 census indicate she was born about 1864.

The 1900 Muscatine County, Iowa census shows the family living in the City of Muscatine, Ward 4. The census shows Horace E. Paceley, head, 39, born January 1861, in Ohio, married 10 years, farm laborer; Elizzie J., wife, 39, born December 1860, in Ohio, married 10 years, given birth to 4 children, 3 children still living, father and mother both born in Ohio; Stella M., daughter, 6, born July 1893, in Iowa; Ida F., daughter, 5, born April 1895, in Iowa; and Mary E., daughter, 2, born December 1898, in Iowa.

Horace died April 18, 1906, at Muscatine, in Muscatine County, Iowa. He is buried in Island Cemetery, at Fruitland, near Muscatine. Buried next to him is their infant son.

The 1910 Muscatine County census show Elizabeth, 46, a widow, had given birth to 5 children and 4 were still living, born in Ohio, father and mother born in Ohio; daughter Stella M., 17, born in Iowa; daughter Ida F., 15, born in Iowa; daughter Mary E., 11, born in Iowa; and Clara H., 9, born in Iowa. All of the children say their father and mother were both born in Ohio. The census shows the family was living in the City of Muscatine and the two older daughters were working at a button factory. Stella, age 17, was a driller at the factory and Ida, age 15, was a carder at the factory.

The oldest daughter, Stella, married between 1910 and 1918. The next daughter, Ida, married in 1919.

The 1920 Muscatine County census shows Elizabeth, 55, owned her home in the City of Muscatine; Mary, 21, working as a sorter at a button factory; and Clara, 19, also working as a sorter at a button factory. Living with them was the oldest daughter, Stella Machu, 25, a widow, working as a finisher at a button factory.
