James Epson Avey

James Epson Avey was born March 10, 1850, in Marion County, Arkansas, the son of Peter Avey and Mary Jane George.

James appears on the 1850 Marion County census with his parents.  James' mother died about 1856 and his father soon re-married.  The 1860 Searcy County census shows ten year old James with his father, Peter, step-mother, Sarah, and sisters Nancy, age 8, and Delila, age 4.

James married Rebecca Parlee Anderson on March 10, 1870, in Arkansas. Rebecca Anderson was born August 27, 1851, in Wayne County, Tennessee, the daughter of James A. Anderson and Nancy Jane Hamm. Nancy Jane Hamm was the daughter of Samuel Hamm. James A. Anderson, born 1829, in Tennessee, was the son of James B. Anderson and Mary Cypert. James B. Anderson was born August 16, 1792, in Virginia, the son of James Anderson, who immigrated to America prior to the Revolutionary War from Sweden or Ireland. Mary Cypert was born in 1792, in North Carolina, the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Robert Scypert and Isabella (last name unknown).

James father died prior to 1870.  The 1870 Izard County, Arkansas census shows James, 19; Rebecca, 19 and James sister Delila, who was listed as 10 years old.

James and Rebecca settled in Stone County, Arkansas, prior to 1873. They had four children.

Rebecca Anderson Avey died September 15, 1876, in Stone County and is buried in Big Spring Cemetery, near Timbo.

James married Lucinda Dodson about 1877. Lucinda Dodson was born about 1860, in Tennessee. The 1910 census shows they had been married thirty-three years at that time, which would have made their marriage in 1877.

The 1910 Stone County census, Sylamore Township, shows 15 year old William "Bill" Bridgman, son of Thomas Jefferson H. Bridgman and Frances Adeline Holden, boarding with James and Lucinda, and working as a hired hand on the farm for them. James was 60 years old at the time and may have been in failing health, as he died four years later.

James died May 4, 1914, in Stone County, and is buried in Big Spring Cemetery, near Timbo, in Stone County. Lucinda died December 1928 and is buried beside James in Big Spring Cemetery.
