My great-great grandfather, John J. Woody, was born September 26, 1828, in Wayne County, Tennessee, the son of Joseph Woody and Mary "Polly" Cypert.
John married my great-great grandmother, Nancy Jane Stanfield, in 1851, in Wayne County. Nancy Jane Stanfield was born November 23, 1835, in Wayne County, the daughter of James William Stanfield and Elizabeth Helton.
John, age 21, appears on the 1850 Wayne County census with his parents Joseph and Mary Woody and 6 of his siblings.
Nancy Jane, age 16, listed simply as Jane, appears on the 1850 Wayne County census with her parents James W. and Elizabeth Stanfield and 5 of her siblings.
John was a farmer. He and Nancy Jane raised their family in Wayne County. The 1860 Wayne County census shows J. J. Woody, 30; Nancy, 24; James, 7; Joseph, 6; Elizabeth, 4; Charity, 3; and Polly Ann, 1 year of age.
The 1870 Wayne County census shows J. J. Woody, 42; N. J., 35; James F., 18; Joseph W., 16; Elizabeth M., 15; Charity M., 14; Polly A., 11; Sarah J., 10; John P., 7; Irenah R., 5; Elijah A., 2; and Thomas J., 4 months old.
The 1880 Wayne County census, 7th District, shows John J. Woody, 51; Nancy J., 44; Charity M., 22; John P., 17; Rachel A., 15; Elijah A., 12; Thomas J., 10; and Charles C., 6 year of age.
Nancy Jane died December 3, 1886, in Wayne County. She is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, in Wayne County.
Sometime after her death, John moved to Arkansas. He died after 1900, while visiting his daughter, Sarah Jane Woody Horton, who lived near the Pope and Van Buren County line in Arkansas. John is buried in Zion Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County.
