My research begins with my great-great-great grandfather, Joseph Woody, who was born about 1805, in Orange County, North Carolina. He was the son of Robert Woody and Rachel Rickets.
Joseph settled in Wayne County, Tennessee, prior to 1826. He married my great-great-great grandmother, Mary "Polly" Cypert, about 1827, in Wayne County. Mary Cypert was born about 1804, in Wayne County, the daughter of Frances Cypert II and Abigail Johnson.
Joseph was a farmer. He and Mary raised their family in Wayne County. They settled along the banks of Indian Creek. Other families living in the immediate area of Joseph and Mary included the Horton, Stanfield, Berry and Cypert families.
Joseph Woody died about 1865, in Wayne County. The 1870 Wayne County census shows Mary living alone. She is listed as having real estate property valued at $1000. The 1880 Wayne County census shows Mary, age 76, living with her son, Joseph S. Woody. Mary died August 1884, in Wayne County.
