John Washington Bridgman

John Washington Bridgman was born August 1, 1812, in Wythe County, Virginia. He was the son of William Bridgman and Mariam Brown.

A biography from the 1877 Holt County Atlas states that John moved to Campbell County, Tennessee when he was about 7 years old.

John married Lucinda Gibson on May 17, 1837, in Tennessee. Lucinda Gibson was born June 17, 1820, in Tennessee, the daughter of George Gibson (b. 1786, VA; d. 1860, MO) and Jemima Dascing Lane (b. 1795, NC; d. 1859, MO).

In 1838, John moved his family from Tennessee to Buchanan County, Missouri.  The 1840 Buchanan County census, Platt Township shows John W. Bridgman's family as one male 20-29; one female 20-29 and one male under 5 years old.

John's family was in Clay County, Missouri in 1844 and in Holt County, Missouri in 1847.  Researchers say John made two trips to California, in 1850 and 1854, driving cattle.

The 1877 Holt County Atlas states that John moved to Brown County, Kansas about  1857-1858.  If that is true, the family had moved back to Holt County by 1860.

The 1860 Holt County, Missouri census shows the family living in Benton Township.  The census shows J. W. Bridgman, 46, farmer, $3000 real property, $1000 personal property; Lucinda, 40; William G., 21, laborer, born in Kentucky; James F., 18, laborer, born in Missouri; Louisa I., 16, born in Missouri; John W., 12, born in Missouri; Marion M., 10, born in Missouri; Jemima, 8, born in Missouri; Zachariah, 4, born in Missouri and Missouri B., 2, born in Missouri.  Living with the family was James Coombs, 22, farmer, born in Kentucky.

The 1870 Holt County, Benton Township, census shows John W. Bridgman, 56, $2000 real property, $1000 personal property; Lucinda, 48; Martha, 18; Jemima, 18; Zacheriah, 14; Missouri B., 12; Dora A., 9; Robert E., 6 and Felina, 1 year old.  (Note: Matha and Jemima are the same person.)

Their daughter Felina died before the 1880 census.  The 1880 Holt County, Missouri census shows the family living at Bigelow. The census shows John W. Bridgman, 67; Lucinda, 58; Alice, 19 and Robert, 16 years old.

John died January 7, 1898, at Bigelow, in Holt County.  Lucinda died in Holt County on October 17, 1899.  They are buried in Old Mound City Cemetery, Mound City, Missouri.
