Our great-great grandfather, Nenion Elijah Cargile, was born about 1810 in Kentucky, the son of John Cargill, Jr. and Nancy Elizabeth Lewis.
Nenion married our great-great grandmother, Sarah Johnson, on August 14, 1835, in Hickman County, Kentucky. Sarah Johnson was born about 1820, in Tennessee. Sarah was under age when she married and her mother Elizabeth gave permission, so we assume her father was dead.
Nenion and Sarah moved their family to Arkansas about 1837 with several other families. Nenion appears on the 1839 Searcy County, Arkansas tax list, as does his father John Cargill and his brother Thomas Cargile.
The 1840 Searcy County census shows Nenion, a farmer, age 20-30; one female 30-40; one female 20-30; and two females under 5 years of age. We believe the older female was Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah's mother. Living near Nenion's family were his parents, brother Robert Lewis Cargile and his family, and his sister Keziah Palmer and her family.
Nenion moved his family to Conway County, Arkansas about 1840-1849. They settled in Benton Township, near Quitman. The 1850 Conway County census shows N. E., 38, a farmer, born in Kentucky; Sarah, 26, born in Tennessee; Nancy, 14; born in Kentucky; Kizsiah, 12, born in Kentucky; Mary, 9, born in Arkansas; Cyntha, 7, born in Arkansas; Eliza, 4, born in Arkansas; and Milla, 2, born in Arkansas. The family was living near Nenion's brother William Cargile.
The family moved to the area of Guy, in Walker Township of Conway County about 1850-1859. Nenion patented 160 acres of land in Walker Township. The patent was filed on July 1, 1859. (This land is in present day Faulkner County.)
Sarah died about 1855-1860. We do not know if the family was at Quitman or Guy when Sarah died.
The 1860 Conway County, Walker Township, census shows Nenion E., 49, a farmer; Margaret, 17; Martha E., 14; Mahala A., 11; J. W., 9, born in Arkansas; and D. B., 5, born in Arkansas. The census shows Nenion's real property valued at $360 and his personal property valued at $150. Living near Nenion was his brother Thomas Cargill.
Nenion married Elizabeth Plant on April 27, 1862, in Conway County. Records show that on February 8, 1867, Nenion appeared before the Conway County Chancery Court to seek a divorce from Elizabeth. Elizabeth did not appear in court, and the judge continued the final action until the "next term". Chancery Court records for the August Term, 1867 show the divorce decree was made "final and absolute".
Nenion left his farm near Guy and moved back to the Quitman area between about 1860 and 1867. Tax records for Conway County show Nenion bought property near the Van Buren County line, in Benton Township of Conway County, near Quitman, about 1867. Tax records show he paid taxes on the property for a few years.
The 1870 Conway County, Benton Township, census shows N. E., 60, a farmer; Marthey, 22; Mahaley, 20; John, 19; and Burvil, 15 years old. Nenion's real property was valued at $800 and his personal property at $500. Living nearby was Nenion's brother Delemore with his family.
In 1873, Conway County was divided and Faulkner County was formed from part of Conway County. Both Benton and Walker Townships became part of Faulkner County at that time. We believe Nenion Cargile died prior to 1880.
Nenion was a farmer and a Justice of the Peace for over 30 years. County records contain countless marriages he performed.
