William T. Hess

William T. Hess was born January 19, 1849, at Marcella, in Independence County, Arkansas, the son of Thomas Wright Hess and Harriett Johnson.

The 1850 Independence County census shows two year old William living in Wallace Township with his parents and older sister.

William's mother died in 1850 or 1851 and his father married Elizabeth Ann Johnson on May 13, 1851, in Independence County.    We believe Elizabeth was a sister to William's mother, Harriett.

William's father, Thomas, died between the time of his marriage in 1851, and the time of the 1860 census.    The 1860 Independence County, Wallace Township, census shows William, age 11, and his sister, Cyntha A., age 13, living with their uncle and aunt William Hess and Angeline (Roberts) Hess and family.

The 1870 Independence County census shows William, age 21, living with his cousin, Thomas M. Hess and Angeline (Roberts - Hess) Hess and family.

William married Colestine Simpson on January 12, 1873, at Marcella, in Independence County.    Colestine Simpson was the daughter of Augustus Simpson and Mary (last name unknown).

William and Colestine had one child born in 1874.    Colestine died in or soon after childbirth.

William then married Colestine's sister, Mary Jane F. Simpson on June 26, 1874, in Stone County, Arkansas.

William and Mary Jane had one child born in 1876.    Apparently Mary Jane also died in or soon after childbirth.

William married (third) Annie Bell Heuse on May 20, 1877, in Arkansas.

The 1880 Stone County, Wallace Township, census shows William, age 30, Annie B., age 21, Martha D., age 6, Maletha E., age 4 and James, age 2 years.    They were living next door to William's cousin Binks Hess and his family.

William died August 30, 1896, at Marcella, in Stone County.

Annie appears on the 1900 Stone County census, a widow, mother of three children, all of them still living.
