My research begins with my 4th great grandfather, Jacob Varner, who was born in Virginia, the son of Adam Varner and Christina R. (last name unknown). (She appears on some IGI records as Christina Rexroad.) Information varies on Jacob's date of birth. We believe he was born 1768 to 1771.
Jacob appears on the 1787 Rockingham County, Virginia tithables list. He was listed as being under the age of 21. He owned one horse.
Jacob married my 4th great grandmother, Sarah Ficklin, about 1791-1792. Census records indicate Sarah Ficklin was probably born about 1770-1775.
Jacob and Sarah appear on the 1800 Bourbon County, Kentucky census, as do Jacob's brothers Adam and Conrad.
The family was in Harrison County, Kentucky in May 1810, when Jacob gave consent for their daughter Jane to marry.
The family moved to Indiana between 1810 and 1820. They appear on the 1820 Posey County, Indiana census, in Lynn Township.
The 1830 Posey County census shows the family as one male age 50-60; two males 20-30; one male 15-20; one male under 5; one female 40-50; one female 15-20; and one female 5-10. Also listed on the census are Jacob's two sons James B. and John.
Sarah died between 1830 and 1836. On December 29, 1836, Jacob married Mrs. Mary Stum. Information from Mary Cole says that Mary was a widow from White County, Illinois.
Mary Cole also advised she has found the will of Mrs. Mary Stum Varner, which was signed October 25, 1838. It makes no mention of Jacob, nor does Jacob appear on the 1840 census. Therefore we assume Jacob died between December 29, 1836 and October 25, 1838.
At this time I would like to thank Mary Cole for sharing her information with me concerning this family. There was a question concerning whether my 3rd great grandmother, Elizabeth Varner, was the daughter of Jacob and Sarah. After corresponding with both Mary and Micki Donnelly, I believe we are all convinced she was their daughter.
