Francis Cypert II

My 4th great grandfather, Francis Cypert II, sometimes referred to as Francis Cypert, Jr., was born about 1750, in Orange (now Chatham) County, North Carolina, the son of Francis Scypeart and Charity Townsend.

Francis served in the North Carolina Militia in 1774-1775. It is possible that he had other military service during the Revolutionary War, but we have found no record of such. Francis is, however, mentioned often in the Chatham County Court records of 1776-1783.

Francis married my 4th great grandmother, Abigail Johnson, in 1783, probably in Chatham County. Abigail Johnson was born about 1760, in Virginia, the daughter of Jesse Johnson.

In 1789, Francis bought out his brother Robert's part of their father's 640 acres of land in Chatham County. Then about 1795, Francis sold his portion of the land and that portion he had bought from his brother Robert, to his other brother, Thomas. Francis then moved his family to Tennessee.

Francis was living in Overton County, Tennessee, in 1805, and in Jackson County, Tennessee, in 1807. He was an early settler in Maury County, Tennessee, before moving with his family, and his brother Robert and family, to Wayne County, Tennessee about 1815-1818. They settled in the Indian Creek Valley, then known as Rain's Creek, on land he received as a land grant for his military service in the war.

Francis was a founding member of the Providence Baptist Church in 1831, in Wayne County. He continued as a member there until his death.

Abigail died September 1828, in Wayne County, and was buried in the Providence Church Cemetery. The cemetery no longer exists. The church and cemetery were located on Indian Creek Road and were in existence between 1820 and 1910. The church moved from that location about 1910 and the cemetery stopped being used. It is thought that the land owner probably removed the markers for the purpose of cultivation of the land. This was at one time a large cemetery, but only a handful of fieldstone markers remain today.

Francis died November 12, 1839, in Wayne County, and was buried beside his wife in the Providence Church Cemetery.
