Mary Horton

Mary "Polly" Horton was born November 23, 1819, in Tennessee, probably in Anderson County. She was the eldest child of Nathaniel Horton and Malinda Atkinson.

Mary's family settled in Wayne County, Tennessee, prior to 1830. Mary married Josiah Youngblood about 1837, in Wayne County. Josiah Youngblood was born September 29, 1818, in Rutherford County, Tennessee, the son of William Youngblood and Edith Lucinda Reed. William Youngblood, born October 11, 1790, in South Carolina, died January 1840, in Wayne County, Tennessee, was the son of Jeremiah Youngblood and Susannah Birgit. Edith Lucinda Reed, born December 11, 1792, in North Carolina, died January 1872, in Wayne County, Tennessee, was the daughter of John Reed and Lydia Hollis. William and Edith Reed Youngblood were early settlers of Rutherford County. Josiah Youngblood's sister, Lydia Youngblood, married James Henry Horton,son of Isaac Horton, Jr. and Mary Watts.

Josiah and Mary settled in Wayne County, where they raised their family. Josiah was a farmer.

Mary died in Wayne County on December 18, 1879. She is buried in Wayne County, in the Sims Cemetery located on top of the hill south of the confluence of Downing Branch with Waterfall. Mary has a headstone marking her grave.

The 1880 Wayne County census, 8th Civil District, shows Josiah Youngblood, 61, a farmer; Elizabeth, daughter, 20; William C. Sims, 17, grandson; and Mathew J. Sims, 11, grandson. (William and Mathew were the sons of daughter Lydia.)

Josiah Youngblood prepared a will which he signed June 3, 1885. A codical to the will was added on November 28, 1889. Following are excerpts from that will and codical:

"I, Josiah Youngblood, do make and publish and make this my last testament....I direct that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid....Second, I direct that all of my real estate be sold and the proceeds from said sale be equally divided into three shares. The heirs of W. G. Youngblood, deceased, have one part, E. M. Sims, wife of Shields Sims, one part and Margret E. Bryant, wife of Harmon Bryant, one part....Third, that all my personal property be sold except such as is hereafter mentioned, and to be divided into four equal shares. One share to go to the heirs of W. G. Youngblood, deceased, one share to E. M. Sims, wife of Shields Sims, one share to the heirs of Lydia H. G. Gravit, deceased, and one part to Margret E. Bryant, wife of Harmon Bryant. And the said Margret E. Bryant, two beds, one bed stead, one safe and one clock, one sewing machine. I hereby appoint Shields Sims and Harmon Bryant my Executors to carry out this my last will and testament, this the third day of June one thousand eight hundred and eighty five." Signed Josiah Youngblood.

"Codical: I, Josiah Youngblood, make this change to the foregoing will to wit: I have this day sold my real estate named in the foregoing will. I direct that the proceeds arriving from the sale of said real estate be divided in three equal shares, one share to go to the heirs of W. G. Youngblood, deceased, one share to M. E. Sims, wife of Shields Sims and one share to Margret E. Bryant, wife of Harmon Bryant." Dated November 28, 1889. Signed: Josiah Youngblood.

Josiah Youngblood died October 26, 1890, in Wayne County. He is buried with his wife in the Sims Cemetery. A tombstone also marks his grave.
