James Henry Horton was born March 16, 1821, in Tennessee. He was the son of Isaac Horton, Jr. and Mary "Polly" Watts.
James Henry married Lydia Youngblood on February 14, 1839, in Wayne County, Tennessee. Lydia Youngblood was born November 18, 1821, at Murfreesboro, in Rutherford County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Youngblood and Edith Lucinda Reed. William Youngblood, born October 11, 1790, in South Carolina, died January 1840, in Wayne County, Tennessee, was the son of Jeremiah Youngblood and Susannah Birgit. Edith Lucinda Reed, born December 11, 1792, in North Carolina, died January 1872, in Wayne County, Tennessee, was the daughter of John Reed and Lydia Hollis. Lydia Youngblood's brother, Josiah Youngblood, married Mary Horton, daughter of Nathaniel Horton and Malinda Atkinson.
James Henry is the only one of Isaac, Jr. and Polly's children to remain in Tennessee when the rest of the family moved to Arkansas about 1851.
The 1860 Wayne County, Tennessee census shows the family living in the 8th Civil District. THe census shows James H. Horton, 39, a farmer with $1100 real property and $1200 personal property; Lydia, 38; William, 20, a farm laborer; Josiah H., 15, a farm laborer; Elihu, 11; Mary, 6; Zachariah, 4; and Hiram, 3 years old. Living with the family was Ada Youngblood, 59, born in North Carolina.
James Henry joined the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was a member of Co. D, 54th Tennessee Infantry. James was taken captive and sent to a POW camp in Ohio. He died on March 18, 1865, in the POW camp at Camp Chase, Ohio. The camp was located near Columbus. James Henry is buried in Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery.
The 1870 Wayne County census, 8th Civil District, shows Lydia Horton, 47 with $9000 real property and $1900 personal property; James Z., 16, a farmer; and John, 6 years old. Living with the family was Lydia's mother, Lucinda Youngblood, 75, born in North Carolina.
On June 30, 1872, Lydia married Jasper "Jap" Cypert.
