Isaac Horton, Jr.

Isaac Horton, Jr. was born December 1, 1788, in New York. He was the son of Isaac Horton and Hannah Farris. We have been told that his middle name was Ezekiel, but this has not been proven.

Isaac, Jr. spent his early childhood in New York. His family moved to Montgomery County, Virginia between about 1800 and 1804.

Isaac, Jr. married Mary H. "Polly" Watts about 1815, probably in Montgomery County. Polly Watts was the daughter of James Watts.

Tax records indicate Isaac, Jr. and his father Isaac, Sr. were in Campbell County, Tennessee in 1820. No other Hortons are listed on the 1820 tax record. The book Early Tennessee Tax List compiled by Sistler, Byron & Barbara, shows that Isaac, James, Nathaniel and William Horton paid taxes in Campbell County, Tennessee, in 1823. We believe this was Isaac, Jr. and his three brothers. We have been unable to prove this however. We do know that Isaac, Jr. settled in Wayne County, Tennessee, prior to 1830. He appears on the 1830 and 1840 Wayne County census.

About 1851, Isaac, Jr. moved his family from Tennessee to Searcy County, Arkansas. He built a log cabin on Big Creek, near Marshall, in Searcy County. Sources say that the next year he moved his family up under the mountain above the Watts Cemetery to get away from the flooding caused by Big Creek.

Isaac, Jr. lived but a short time after coming to Arkansas, however. He died July 23, 1853, in Searcy County. He is buried in the Watts Cemetery, located on the Cecil Jennings farm near Marshall.

The 1860 Searcy County census, Campbell Township, shows Polly Horton, 64, $400 real property, born in North Carolina and her youngest son, Nathaniel, 23, born in Tennessee living together.

The 1870 Searcy County census, Bear Creek Township, shows Polly, age 75, living with her daughter, Sallie Ann (Horton) Gray and her family.

Polly died October 18, 1872, in Searcy County, and was laid to rest beside her husband in the Watts Cemetery.

Isaac, Jr. and Polly had a large number of children, all born in Tennessee. When they moved to Arkansas, all their children except James Henry Horton moved with them.
