James William Horton was born about 1812, possibly in Virginia. He was the grandson of Isaac Horton and Hannah Farris. We believe his father's name was "James".
James first appears in our records, listed as a grandson of Isaac and Hannah Horton in a war pension application that Isaac filed in Lawrence County, Tennessee, in 1825. In the application, James is listed as being 13 years old which would mean he was born about 1812.
James settled with his grandparents in Wayne County, Tennessee. He married Rachel Cynthia Atkinson about 1832 in Tennessee. Cynthia Atkinson was born about 1820, the daughter of William Nathaniel Atkinson and Celia Elizabeth Prince, both natives of South Carolina. We believe Cynthia was a sister to Malinda Atkinson, who married Nathaniel Horton, son of Isaac and Hannah Horton.
James and Cynthia raised their family in Wayne County. They appear in various Wayne County census records. The 1850 Wayne County census shows them living in the 8th Civil District. The census shows James Horton, 41, a farmer, $200 real property; Cinthia, 35; David, 17; Sarah, 16; John, 14; Martha, 12; Emily, 9; William, 7; Nancy, 4; and Isaac, 2 years old. Living beside James was his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and John Kelley and their family.
The 1870 Wayne County census, 8th Civil District, shows James Horton, 63, a farmer with $250 real property and $400 personal property; Sintha, 56; Agness M., 19; Mary C., 19; and James C., 15, a farm laborer. Living with the family was W. J. Cromwell, 19, a farmer with $30 personal property.
We believe James died between 1870 and 1880. The 1880 Wayne County census shows Cynthia, age 67. Living with her was Cynthia was her daughter Mary. Cynthia died April 18, 1885.
