John A. Stanfield was born August 4, 1843, in Wayne County, Tennessee, the son of James William Stanfield and Elizabeth Helton.
John's parents both died in 1851, when he was about eight years old. John was raised by his mother's sister's family, James Dugal Copeland and Malinda (Helton) Copeland.
John married Elizabeth Jane Copeland on February 17, 1861, in Wayne County. Elizabeth Jane Copeland was born September 10, 1840, in Wayne County, the daughter of James Dugal Copeland and Malinda Helton. It is believed that Malinda was a sister to John's mother, Elizabeth Helton. James Dugal Copeland was born May 5, 1820, in Madison County, Alabama, and died April 5, 1905, in Wayne County, Tennessee. Malinda Helton was born April 4, 1822, in Wayne County, and died March 29, 1856, in Wayne County.
The 1870 Wayne County, Tennessee census, 8th Civil District, shows John Stanfield, 26, a farmer with $1000 real property and $875 personal property; Elizabeth J., 29; Malinda C., 8; James W., 7; Elitha, 4; Sarah E., 2; and Nancy, 1 month old.
All but one of John and Elizabeth's children was born in Wayne County. About 1884 John moved his family to Hardin County, Tennessee, where the last child was born.
John died January 16, 1893, in Hardin County, Tennessee. Elizabeth died January 19, 1916. They are both buried in New Harmony Cemetery in Hardin County.
